About ShéLor School
of Dance
SheLor
School of Dance opened for business September 1984. My vision for a dance studio
occurred with the loss of my sister Shelly G. Portman, who was also a dancer.
She has served as an ongoing inspiration to me through the 22 years of business.
The continual pursuit of quality dance education
continues to be a challenging goal. I have prioritized and embraced this
endeavor and will continue to work at fulfilling this goal through my staff and
myself. This past summer of 2005, teachers of SheLor attended the Royal
Academy’s National Summer Dance Camp in Maryland and the Gus Giordano Jazz
Congress in Chicago. I will remain committed to educating our parents to assure
them that quality dance education is the standard of SheLor School of Dance.
I continue to be active in national and
international teacher organizations. In 2006, I became certified in Power House
Pilates in addition to Physical Mind Institute, which are both certified
“Pilate’s Method” programs. I am a member of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD),
the classical training ballet syllabus by which SheLor School of Dance trains
it’s students. The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), provides continued education
and certification to my teachers and students in classical ballet. I also am a
member of Dance Educators of America (DEA) and I participate in national
organizations of competiton for my students entry since 1990.
Ballet certification and competition has been
forefront in my devotion to my students’ dance education. I continue to certify
my students and compete every two years. My education program is constructed to
allow students to graduate to levels that may offer certification and enter them
into competition as they excel. In 2005, the Royal Academy of Dance examined
thirty-four students of SheLor School of Dance. The students certified and
passed with honors in Grades 3, 4, 6 and 7. A new Pre-Competitive level of
classes has been added to SheLor’s dance curriculum for students and parents to
better identify the responsibilities, challenges and demands of competition. It
allows the student to “step into” competition on a gradual basis.
In 2004-2005 SheLor began it’s endeavor, “The
Highlights of the Nutcracker”, a dinner theatre performance done by our
Competitive and Pre-Competitive students along with guest performers. This has
opened a venue of opportunity for performance and opportunity for students to
receive a money scholarship award from SheLor. Students have performed in the
last two years for several public events and community groups i.e., the Butler
Soroptomist Club, the Clearview Mall, Bozcov’s, the YWCA Personal Care Home, the
Friends of VNA Hospice, the St. Fidelis Woman’s Club and Slippery Rock
University. I will continue to seek community opportunity as a goal for our
students to perform and reach out.
I emphasize dance education of our students is
not and should not be limited to only the student of excellence. Nurturing all
students is what “dance art” is about. Dance can be a wonderful source of
accomplishment to every child. I and my staff will continue to direct SheLor
School of Dance in a way that gives every child an opportunity to excel in dance
to the best of their ability.
